Thank you for taking the time out to chat to us Meeri, your artworks are just stunning I am such a fan.

You’ve travelled quite a lot and have ended up in the Blue Mountains, how are you enjoying mountain life?

I’ve always loved the Blue Mountains – I think it says something about preferring quieter living when I think about the places we’ve lived over the years… the busiest/biggest city we’ve been living in recently is Melbourne, which I really like. Prior to Melbourne we’ve been in Uppsala, Sweden & for a longer period of time Helsinki, Finland – these are perfectly sized cities for me (& my partner).

Do you remember always loving to draw? even at an early age?

I do remember being inspired by my mum’s sketchbooks… And watching other adults sketching got me thinking “I want to do that!” – and I think this was sparked from a fairly young age (10 yrs old? Or younger perhaps..)

How old were you when you realised you were pretty good at it! ?

I grew to love drawing and sketching whilst in high school – I came to realize that naturalistic drawing basically came naturally to me! I spent a lot of time at home glued to my desk drawing animals and creatures and would easily be lost for hours in detail.

At what point did you think this is what you wanted to do for a career?

When I began my University studies (BA Fine Arts) I was drawn to experimenting with more sculptural & textile-based mediums, and really didn’t do much drawing or illustrating during those three years. I then moved on to my Masters of Environmental Art in Helsinki Finland, and continued my practice using textiles, sculptural installations &sewing techniques as my method for exploration. Once graduating from these studies I actually got a job working for an eco fashion label in Helsinki, and I was designing re-purposed & recycled clothing! I was also able to dabble in print design here, and this was probably the start of my re-emergence back into a more graphic direction. We moved to Melbourne in 2010, and I got a job for the wonderful Swedish stationery brand kikki.K, and that was that – all my illustration dreams came to life! It has been since working for kikki.K that I realized illustration is what I want to do now, and making it my career was a pretty exciting thing.

The beauty of my role at kikki.K is that I get to illustrate all day long (well, maybe not all day long but a lot of the time!) and it is such a different style to my personal work that I am able to maintain my passion for drawing after work!

You have worked and collaborated with some beautiful brands, is there someone on your wish list that you’d love to work with?

I would absolutely love to try working more with textiles again – one of my biggest dreams would be illustrating for Marimekko (especially since I have that Finnish connection to the brand). And in Australia on a more local level I’d love to collaborate with someone like Elk Accessories and create some beautiful textile print designs - or then on a different direction again illustrate a magazine cover for Frankie Magazine.

Your drawings of animals have such detail, do you prefer animals to portrait work?

I don’t necessarily prefer animals, but I do enjoy capturing the detail in animals – I almost think of it as a scientific procedure to make sure I get every detail just right. I recently did some portrait work for an editorial piece in an Amercian kids magazine called La Petite – and I really enjoyed this! I think I would like to do some more portraiture work, and some more figurative work with people.

  1. a god thingie came down and raped a rctenely married woman, who then gave birth to a guy who was really a son of a god, or a god himself; it depends on who you ask.And then he miraculously healed a crap load of sick and handicapped people and even some dead guys.At a party he transformed ordinary well water into booze, and another time he whipped up a dinner of toast and seafood (perhaps lox and bagels, we're not really sure) for tons of people from a couple plates of leftovers. Truly the most amazing fella. Well, maybe you can find the score on a gladiator tournament. ..and Team Augustus kicked butt against Team Claudius; Plavos and Paladin both lost limbs and won't be competing next week, but spunky little Servius will advance to the next round, having taken Lucius's head as a trophy in the last minutes before the lions cleaned up the field +2Was this answer helpful?
